Understanding Grip Styles
Most players fall into one of three grip styles, and the mouse size that feels comfortable depends heavily on which one you use. Palm grip rests your whole hand on the mouse with fingers flat, and tends to feel best on larger, longer shells that fill the palm. Claw grip arches the fingers with only the fingertips and palm heel touching the shell, favoring shorter mice with a steeper front hump for the arched fingers to clear. Fingertip grip lifts the palm entirely off the mouse, relying on the fingertips alone — this usually pairs with smaller, lighter shells since the wrist and arm do more of the aiming work.
Grip style and hand size interact: a large hand using fingertip grip often wants a mouse closer to what a medium palm-grip hand would pick. That's why Shape Finder measures your actual finger span while gripping rather than asking for grip style and glove size as separate dropdown answers — the camera captures how your hand behaves, not just how big it is.
How Width and Length Are Weighted
Shape Finder scores every mouse by width match (60%) and length match (40%) against your measured hand. Width is weighted higher because a shell that's too wide or too narrow directly changes your thumb and pinky anchor position on the sides of the mouse — the main source of discomfort during long sessions. Length matters too, but players tolerate a wider length range comfortably since grip style (how far up the shell your fingers rest) already compensates for a lot of it.
